Jane Fonda rewears 2014 Cannes Film Festival gown to the 2020 Oscars - Insider - INSIDER

  • Jane Fonda rewore an Elie Saab dress to the 2020 Oscars that she first walked the red carpet in six years ago, during the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.
  • Fonda also had a bright red coat over her shoulder that looked very similar to the one that she vowed last year would be the last item of clothing she'd ever buy.
  • Posting a photo of her Oscars look on Instagram, the actor said her jewelry was from Pomellato, which sources "ethically harvested gold and sustainable diamonds."

Jane Fonda arrived at the 2020 Oscars on Sunday night in a sparkling red Elie Saab gown.

Chances are you felt a prickling sense of déjà vu as you clapped eyes on the actress, and your instincts would be right. Fonda, 82, first stepped out in the dress, from Elie Saab's fall/winter 2013 haute couture collection, at the 67th Cannes Film Festival in 2014.

For this year's Academy Awards, she accessorized the look with a pixie crop, a smokey eye, and Pomellato's Tango earrings with brown diamonds, Iconica bangle with brown diamonds, and Sabbia ring. In an Instagram post, Fonda explained she chose to wear Pomellato "because it only uses responsible, ethically harvested gold and sustainable diamonds."

This time around, she also paired the look with a red coat slung purposefully over her shoulder. So much more than a straightforward styling choice, the coat had meaning, as Fonda had previously said it was the last item of clothing she would ever buy.

As an environmental activist, Fonda spent most Fridays in October and November last year peacefully protesting the dangers of climate change at the United States Capitol.

Fonda, who calls her protests Fire Drill Fridays, was arrested on five consecutive Fridays, the first time on October 11 alongside members of Oil Change International, an environmentalist nonprofit group.

As part of her protests, Fonda has sworn that her red coat, which she wears to every Fire Drill Friday, is the last piece of clothing she will ever buy.

"You see this coat? I needed something red, and I went out and found this coat on sale. This is the last article of clothing that I will ever buy," she told a crowd during one of her Fire Drill Fridays in 2019.

"When I talk to people about 'We don't really need to keep shopping. We shouldn't look to shopping for our identity. We don't need more stuff,' then I have to walk the walk too," she continued. "So I'm not buying any more clothes."

Other stars also championed sustainability on the red carpet. Margot Robbie wore a black vintage Chanel gown, while the "Charlie's Angels" director Elizabeth Banks arrived at the Vanity Fair Oscars bash in a scarlet Badgley Mischka creation that she wore to the publication's party in 2004. Best-actor winner Joaquin Phoenix completed his award season by wearing the same Stella McCartney tuxedo he's worn to every single event.
